Hello Everyone,

You may have already seen the news, but this has been a huge day over at UNICO: AWAKENING headquarters.

As has been announced widely by this point, SCHOLASTIC imprint Graphix will be publishing multiple volumes UNICO: AWAKENING!!! I could talk about it in my own words, but I’ll let the press release speak for itself:

“Scholastic, the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books, announced today the publication of Unico: Awakening, a dynamic reimagining of Osamu Tezuka’s (1928–1989) classic Unico manga for a new generation of readers. Releasing on August 6, 2024, in the U.S., the multibook world and language rights deal—including four volumes, a handbook and activity book—was negotiated by David Saylor, vice president and publisher of Graphix, and Dara Hyde at Hill Nadell Literary Agency and Aki Yanagi.

Full of striking, colorful artwork, with pages that read left to right in the Western comics style—as did Tezuka’s original manga story—Unico: Awakening marks the launch of an irresistible manga series that reinvents Tezuka’s beloved character. Adorable, funny, and good-hearted, Unico is a young unicorn filled with hope and perseverance, perfect for a new generation of manga readers.”

We couldn’t be more overjoyed, and it is to you, our Backers who believed in us, that we are thankful. Without your support we had a hard time imagining that UNICO: AWAKENING would become a reality. And now, his journey will carry on far into the future, with an expanded group of friends, foes, and cosmic challenges for our protagonist to overcome.

Now, I’m sure you’re all wondering what this means for your UNICO: AWAKENING manga. And the answer is: very little! You’ll still be receiving your Kickstarter edition of the book before Scholastic releases theirs next summer. This limited Kickstarter edition will include exclusive material that will not be published in the Scholastic edition, including all of the art prints from the campaign and a few other special surprises.

In short, the manga each of our Backers receives will be the only ones of their kind.

Stay tuned for more big UNICO: AWAKENING news as we finish up the book! We are truly getting into the home stretch now, as we’re still looking to ship your books this fall.

AWAKENINGがシリーズとして発行されることになりました！　私自身の言葉で説明してもよ

「スコラスティックはグラフィックノベル界1位の出版社、児童書の販売業社で、本日

UNICO:AWAKENINGの出版を発表した。これは手塚治虫(1928-1989)のマンガ、ユニコを新し

い世代の読者に向けて大胆に再想像した作品である。2024年8月6日にアメリカで発売されるこ

の作品は複数冊の契約で、かつ世界向けの複数言語での出版権も含む権利を取得、そのなかに

は４冊の本編とハンドブック、アクティビティ・ブックも含まれる。この交渉は副社長で

Graphixの発行人デビッド・セイラーと、

ヒル・ナデル・エージェンシーのダーラ・ハイド、柳亨英との間で行われた。

これほど嬉しいことはありません。また、私たちを信じてくださった支援者の皆様にもとても

感謝していることをお伝えしたいです。あなたたちのサポート無くしてUNICO: AWAKENINGは

実現することはできませんでした。そしてこの旅はさらに続くことになりました。さらなる仲

間や敵や宇宙にまたがる挑戦が我らの主人公も待ち受けることになります。

皆さんは今回の発表がUNICO: AWAKENINGにとってどういう影響があるのか気になっているこ

とと思います。その答えは、とても小さいものだということです。スコラスティックから来年

の夏に発行される前にキックスターター版の本を受け取ることになります。このキックスター

ター版にはここだけでしか見られないコンテンツも掲載されることになりますし、スコラステ

ィック版には含まれません。そのなかにはここまでのプリント用のイラスト全てに加えて、さ

らなるサプライズも用意しています。

支援者が受け取るマンガはここでしか手に入らないものになるということです。

Hello Everyone, and happy summer!

Thank you for your patience as we forge ahead with the creation of UNICO: AWAKENING. We have so many exciting developments that we’ll be able to share soon, and as always, we are grateful for each and every one of you.

It is also true that in the course of working on this amazing project, we have come to terms with the fact that very unexpected real life challenges have impacted the delivery schedule. We are now aiming to fulfill all backer rewards in the late Fall, as we finish the book and get it ready for the printer. We will continue to keep you updated as we move ahead, providing accurate ETAs, alongside any other UNICO: AWAKENING news that arises.

In the meantime, here are some spoiler-free preview snippets below. As with before, we’d like to request that you don’t share these images with the outside world.

Also, while I have your attention, I wanted to share that two books I am co-writing with Patrick Macias (The Editor in Chief of Otaku USA and the co-host of the terrific podcastPure Tokyoscope) were just announced. Both THE ESSENTIAL ANIME: GUIDE and A KID'S GUIDE TO ANIME AND MANGA, will be published this fall by Running Press. We can't wait for others to share in our enthusiasm for all things anime and manga! 

Again we want to iterate that, as we finish the book, we’d all like to thank you for your patience. As this is our first Kickstarter, and this project means the world to us, we’re dedicated to ensuring that we deliver an exquisite product that lives up to ours (and yours) standards.

Here at UNICO: AWAKENING headquarters, we’re already feeling the heat. We’re so grateful for your patience as we charge ever onward on finishing the manga. There is so much goodness and excitement ahead; stay tuned as the updates become more frequent, and more information is available.
